Between 10 and 12 June 2026, the conference «Reframing the Enlightenment. Intellectual and Political Disputes Today / Le défi des Lumières. Enjeux intellectuels et politiques» will take place at the German Historical Institute in Paris (GHIP), organized by Daniel Fulda (Universität Halle-Wittenberg) and Christine Zabel (GHIP). The winds of scholars’ and society’s favour toward the Enlightenment have shifted. The uplifting narrative of progress attributed to the Enlightenment has long underpinned liberal societies, particularly in the West, but in recent years it has come under fierce criticism from postcolonial perspectives, political fringes, and some eighteenth‑century specialists. The conference will reflect the contemporary context in which Enlightenment research is conducted. Its aim is to move beyond a simplistic for‑or‑against positioning on the Enlightenment and to emphasise the complexity of both the Enlightenment as a historical phenomenon and its legacy for the present and the future.

Le vent a tourné dans l’opinion des spécialistes et de la société à l’égard des Lumières. Le récit optimiste des progrès attribués aux Lumières a longtemps sous-tendu les sociétés libérales, particulièrement en Occident, mais ces dernières années il a vivement été critiqué – tant par les approches postcoloniales et les marges politiques que par certains spécialistes du xviiie siècle. Le colloque reflétera le contexte contemporain de la recherche sur les Lumières. Il vise à dépasser le clivage simpliste « pour ou contre » les Lumières et à mettre en évidence la complexité du phénomène historique qu’elles représentent ainsi que de son héritage pour le présent et l’avenir.
