Call for Applications: Dissertation Prize 2025 of the German Society for the Study of the 18th Century (DGEJ)

The DGEJ was founded in 1975 and currently has around 750 members, comprising scholars and academic institutions in Germany and abroad. The DGEJ is committed to advancing research on the 18th century across all academic fields. The DGEJ organises annual academic conferences and publishes the journal „Das achtzehnte Jahrhundert“. Membership is open to all those interested in researching the 18th century.

In 2025, the DGEJ will be introducing a new Dissertation Prize, donated by Friedrich Waitz von Eschen and valued at EUR 5,000. The award ceremony will take place on 19 September 2025 at the DGEJ’s annual conference in Wolfenbüttel. We would like to cordially invite colleagues who have recently completed their dissertation to apply for the DGEJ Dissertation Prize.

The award will honour outstanding dissertations in German, English or French, whether already published or unpublished, from all disciplines relevant to the study of the 18th century. The dissertation must focus on the 18th century.

To be eligible for the 2025 prize, the dissertation must have been defended and filed as part of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree between the dates of 1 February 2022 and 31 January 2025.

Applications for the DGEJ Dissertation Prize are accepted in German, English or French. Please include the following documents:

  • the submitted or published version of the dissertation,
  • a summary of the dissertation (max. 3’000 characters),
  • at least two reviews of the dissertation, stating the grade,
  • confirmation of acceptance of the dissertation by the university,
  • curriculum vitae.
